Welcome Nancy Lennea

I am pleased to welcome Nancy Lennea to my blog today. Yesterday she had the release of her novel Secret Love Match with Red Rose Publishing. So without further ado, here she is.

Guest Article: Volunteerism & Romance writing? By Nancy Lennea
First of all, I want to thank Kat for welcoming me to her blog. I am excited to speak about my debut novel, Secret Love Match. This is my first release so I am new at having to promote my work and I have been busy. What would Kat’s readers like to hear about my book and myself? She loves cats. At one time I had four wonderful feline friends. I have lost them over the years and now have a gently little orange striped boy cat named Blaze. Oh, I have had dogs and two sons, but cats are the ultimate companion for a homebody like me.
I wasn’t always working from home. I spent over 32 years in the retail and customer service segments. From discount store clerk to hardware store assistant manager, I worked with a smile…and a backache. Once the kids were older, I became a volunteer EMT on the local FAST Squad then joined the volunteer fire department. My husband put on bunker gear as well. We enjoyed the camaraderie of training, working fires, visiting sickly neighbors, and raising funds for our budget-strapped town in rural northern New Hampshire.
Volunteerism has always been an important part of our lives. When first married, my husband volunteered as a Little League coach and we were both Cub Scout Den Leaders (during different years for different sons). We had to slow down a bit and let the younger boys and girls take over then we moved to the south. I keep busy with occasional projects for the North Carolina Museum of Science as well as volunteering as an officer for my local writers group. It’s no wonder that I make my heroine and hero volunteers for breast cancer awareness. Becka spends a couple days in beautiful Baltimore filming TV ad spots using well known political figures, Hollywood Stars, and athletes. Taylor helps when she gets in a predicament. He takes over late, near the end of the book, when Becka is hospitalized…well, you will have to read the book to find out what happens next.
I urge everyone to offer an hour here or there to any group, organization, or needy neighbor that could use the help. Then kick back, pat yourself on the back, and read my debut contemporary romance, Secret Love Match. Check out my book trailer at www.nancylennea-inlove.blogspot.com or get more information at http://redrosepublishing.com or just click on the buy link: http://bit.ly/diHVbn.
Here is a short blurb about my book. I hope you like it.
Rebecca Delacourt has played and taught tennis for the last three years. At twenty-one, she knows what she wants. Without help from her wealthy parents, she buys a condo in Glen Cove, NY and plans to be on the Olympic Tennis team. She has no time for men, marriage, or children. Her mother gave up her acting career when she became pregnant with older sister, Laney, whose illegitimate son is mute due to recent emotional trauma. Rebecca still manages to squeak out some time for her charity work for breast cancer research in Baltimore every year.

Taylor, a former TV actor, notices Becka. She knows him—she’s dreamed of his TV persona for years. They meet at her parent’s country club. He thinks he’s found gold in the athletic blond. After beating him at tennis he meets her parents. Too bad he knows them—a former co-star, and the man helping get him auditions.

Her sister moves in—thwarting any privacy. She’s hiding out and is attacked. Taylor finds himself falling for Becka. Will he change his arrogant ways, save her nephew from kidnappers, and realize she’s the one? Becka wonders if dreams can still be reached with someone beside her. Will they reach their dreams together?
Again, thanks for having me here today. Please visit my website www.nancylennea.com for an excerpt.
Nancy lives the dream. After growing up in Huntington, New York, and raising two handsome sons in New Hampshire, Nancy and her husband moved to North Carolina where she writes full-time. She is a member of Romance Writers of America, Heart of Carolina Romance Writers, Celtic Heart Romance Writers, Fantasy-Futuristic & Paranormal Romance Writers, and Sisters in Crime. She also writes paranormal romance as Nancy Lee Badger.

Thank you again for being here Nancy. It was a blast.

Welcome Franny Armstrong!

Today I have the wonderful Franny Armstrong paying a visit. So without further ado I turn the stage over to her.

I can’t imagine any other job would give me so much pleasure as writing does. Authors tend to live in their own world of fantasy until the muses in their head force them to place their ideas on computer/paper and move on to the next story or scene.

An avid reader my entire life, I found the mysteries of Phyllis A Whitney fascinating and couldn’t wait to move on to the next story. It’s almost impossible to have a favorite author, yet my list begins with Christine Feehan, Maggie Shayne, Kelley Armstrong, J. K. Rowling, J. R. R. Tolkein, and many more.

The only way I believe that an author can make it to the top or on the New York Times Best Seller List is by having a strong focus and an attitude that says: ‘Never Surrender! Never Give Up!’

When illness forced me into disability, I changed that to ABILITY and became an author who could work from home. It’s almost impossible for me at this point to work outside my home, but my as my health improves a little more each day, I inch forward and weave my way through the path of opportunities as I meet so many wonderful people as an author.

If you thing that you can’t (hate that word) do something, you never will. It’s important to always focus on CAN and BELIEVE in yourself. Not every author will make it to the top ten list, or hit it big like J. K. Rowling, but if you have the faith in yourself that you can, then anything is possible.

My fourth release, FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES comes out on June 18th and I sincerely hope you get to enjoy hours of fun and romance in this Paranormal Romantic Comedy. Below are the blurb and an excerpt for you to enjoy.

Thank you Kat for having me on your blog and I hope that you’ll come on mine too as one of your characters. It’s a fun character blog that enables you to BE your character, if only for a few minutes.

Hugs
Franny Armstrong – ParaNovelGirl

Make sure you take a look at my www.paranovelgirls.com site as it has a whole new look now. More to come, of course.

BLURB for FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES by Franny Armstrong-ParaNovelGirl

Gemini Knight, youngest of six sisters, is a bumbling witch, whose spell backfires, landing her and her friend in the bedroom of a gorgeous naked stranger fresh from the shower. Before he could say a word they disappear, leaving only their giggles behind.
Braxton Thorne is determined to find the beautiful witch who transported through his tight security spells. The wealthy, powerful corporate wizard, eldest of six brothers, seeks her out, only to fall under her spell when she lands them both in a Dumpster, making him laugh for the first time in his adult life. The only problem is that as their mystical love ignites, the two families rekindle a forty year old family feud full throttle to keep the couple apart!

EXCERPT FOR WEBSITE:
The thought of entering women’s hair salon was intimidating at best, but since he was a man who took on any challenge, he took a deep breath and opened the door.
Every eye in the place focused on him. Smiling, he said, “Hello. Do you have a stylist here with short red hair? She cut my hair some time back though I can’t remember her name.”
A blond woman rushed up to him and he realized that it was the woman that had been with the red-head the first time she came to his room. He didn’t think she recognized him though.
“Gem is in the back right now, but I can take you in ten minutes,” she said, breathless as she stared up at him.
“I’m sorry but I’d really like to stick with Gem, if you don’t mind.”
Though disappointed, she nodded and pointed to a styling chair. “Please, have a seat and I’ll get her.”
“Thank you,” he said and walked over to the chair and fitting his large body in it. Silence still reigned and he waved his hand so that the customers and stylists would forget he was there.
He didn’t wait long. Gem herself came out, wearing black-rimmed glasses that didn’t suit her. She rushed up and began taking his hair out of the ponytail.
“Hello, sir. I’m sorry to keep you waiting. How would you like your hair cut today?” she asked then pulled his hair forward looking at him in the mirror. When she gasped as recognition dawned on her, he grabbed her wrist and transported with her out of the shop.
Seconds later, they reappeared, standing knee-deep in a food Dumpster. He pulled a banana peel off his shoulder and helped her remove spaghetti noodles from her hair while she stared up at him, speechless, and trembling.
Then, for the first time in his adult life, he started laughing.
His hand still held her wrist captive, but when she heard him laugh she relaxed slightly. His smile lit up his face, taking away all tension and stress. His laughter flowed over her like warm honey.
“I’m sorry. I usually fly alone. I’m not so good at navigating,” she said offering him a bright smile.
“This is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to me,” he said picking another noodle out of her hair.
“It happens to me all the time.” She shrugged.
“Do you mind if we get out of the Dumpster now?” he asked wrinkling his nose.
“I can try.” Uncertain of her skills she gnawed on her lower lip while she tried to figure out a spell to use.
“Why don’t we just do it the old fashioned way?” he suggested adding, “As long as you promise to stay long enough to talk to me?”
Studying his expression, she must have found something to trust in him because she nodded.
Brax jumped out then reached up and lifted her down.

Releasing Tomorrow!

Tomorrow, the 17th of July, book 2 in my Gods At Work series, Heart Of The Queen will be releasing from Red Rose Publishing. Here's a brief blurb about what its about.

When money troubles force the Gods to come and work among mortals, Hera decides to become a midwife and takes the name of Heather Juno. By chance, two stunning men named James Rhodes and Noah Blake come into her office to help out James’s sister. The men are lovers but they want to add Hera to their family. Divorced from a husband who spent thousands of years cheating on her, Hera is extremely reluctant in spite of being attracted to both men. James and Noah, veterans of Iraq are used to fighting for what they want and they are not about give Hera up, The battle is on for The Heart Of The Queen.

Oh My God!

I am stunned beyond measure. My debut novel, Voice In The Night released by Red Rose Publishing is being featured on the main page of Fictionwise. That's incredible enough but I'm being featured alongside authors like Dean Koontz! I am completely thrilled, shocked and over the moon about this. I'm doing the happy dance all over the place.:-)

Main Character Death

Okay I have heard that Alan Ball, the force behind True Blood based on Charaline Harris's novels intends to bump off a central character this season. Now, unless he is completely going away from the books, I seriously doubt that it will be Sookie, Eric or Bill who bites the farm. Now having said that, a lot of other characters who are central are at risk.

Okay first up, Pam, Eric's offspring and assistant at Fangtasia. She's been making Lafayette sell vamp blood under Eric's orders. If she gets caught the Magister might put her on the chopping block. I hope it isn't her and I doubt it since they have finally introduced her as a main character and not just a sometimes there person. I also really like Pam.

Lafayette is next. Now in the books he died in the beginning of book 2 so he's already over his limit and he's pushing the blood. If he gets caught, I doubt they'll just torture him again.

Sophie Anne, the Vampire Queen. She's the one making Eric sell the vampire blood to fill her empty coffers. She needs cash fast and doesn't care how she gets it. Those who have read the books know her days are numbered but it is way too soon for her to die now. Still, she might be on the block.

Jason, Sookie's brother. Okay he's a jerk but I doubt he's going down. He provides too much delicious fodder through his sheer stupidity.

Sam. He's on a quest to find his origins and even though they are sleazy I doubt he's doomed. After all, if he goes where will Sookie work? And Sam is the only supe she has always been able to count on to help her out.

Lettie Mae, Tara's boozer mother who spouts off about Jesus every time she opens her mouth. I wouldn't mind seeing her bite the dust. She's a nasty piece of work.

Chow, Longshadow's replacement. All who've read the books know that in book 4 he dies. So he's a real candidate for a slightly early demise.

Tara, Sookie's so-called friend. In both the books and now the series Tara has been anything but a good friend to Sookie. Far too selfish and just plain nasty. Frankly, I'd like to see them knock her off. She doesn't add anything but pure spite to the show if you ask me.

So of course that isn't every main character but these are the ones I think are most likely in trouble. But if one has to go, I'd really prefer Tara and my second choice would be Lettie Mae.

Tonight Is The Night!

Tonight is the premiere of True Blood. I can't wait. I am such an Alexander Skarsgard fanatic. Dow with Bill I say! Team Eric all the way. Woohoo! And check out this great pic of Alexander as Eric with a bare and sexy chest. Yum! True Blood airs tonight on HBO at 9 pm EST. But tune in at 8:45 for the behind the scenes preview.

Chandel McDonie

International cover model Chandel McDonie is going to be dropping by my good friend Franny Armstrong's Blog Talk Radio show today. She'll be talking about her career and what it's like working with Mr. Romance himself Jimmy Thomas. The show starts at 12:30 pm EST and you can either go to the website and enter the chat room or you can call in. The phone number 347-934-0113.

I'll be calling in. A couple weeks ago Franny had Jimmy Thomas on and for the next few weeks she'll have some of his female counterparts.:-) It's gonna be fun.

Only One More Day!

Only one more day to go until season 3 of True Blood starts. I love this show. I'm a huge fan of the books this show is based on. Charlaine Harris really created something special when she made the Sookie Stackhouse novels. The series does follow the books somewhat. Like book 1 was season 1 and book 2 was season 2. Book 3 will be season 3. But there are differences.

The books are all told from Sookie's point of view so in order to bring the other characters in they had to create storylines. I think it's worked well. And season 3 is gonna be awesome. I love Alexander Skarsgard who plays Eric. Eric is my favorite character. And Alan Ball, the director of True Blood has promised that in episode 1 tomorrow we will get to see Eric completely naked. Hooray!

My mom is already aware that unless she wants to die she is not to bug me between 9 and 10 tomorrow night. I won't answer the phone or anything else during that hour. That is me and Eric time.:-) Just one more day, less than 24 hours to go until True Blood starts. Yippee!!!

Welcome L.J. Holmes

Today I have L.J. Holmes stopping by for an in-depth interview. And, as she is my mom I can get away with asking her things other people can not. So, without further ado, here's my interview with L.J. Holmes.

1: Thank you for being here. Would you tell us a little bit about you?

I’m your Mom, so you know all my deep dark secrets, but if you think I am going to blab them all here…HAH! With that aside, I am a mom…yep yours and your brother’s…oh and I suppose we should toss in the two kitties, Mama Bear and Spatz too. I have a MA degree in Special Education and used to be a Teacher of the Handicapped, specifically I worked with children born with Down Syndrome; they have such an amazingly cheerful way of looking at life despite the many limitations life has forced upon them. But I’m retired. My job now is to be the burr in your saddle and may I say I am thoroughly enjoying it. Giving you reasons to roll your eyes at me, give me the raspberries, or just groan rather dramatically takes a lot of work and forethought on my part.

2: I have to ask the obligatory question. What inspired you to begin first writing?

Now you want me to get serious…Okay. You know the story, but those visiting your blog don’t, so here goes. I was lucky enough to grow up with my Grandmother living with us and acting as my primary parent 95% of the time and two incredible 80 plus year old ladies, Katie Sickle and Mary Powers living two doors away who regaled this rapt little girl with the many stories from their lives. I was hooked. If only I could weave tales half as well as those three women did, I knew I would be one step closer to heaven.

3: Is there anything you do to get ready to write, any specific thing you need to get in the mood?

Curse my muse because she’s usually yanked from a deep sleep and is dancing around eager to speak and won’t wait until it’s a decent hour. Naturally I have to grab pen and paper and try to write without my glasses on and in the dark. It’s always crooked, by the way, but she doesn’t care. All that matters to her is that I didn’t ignore her, like she’d let me, and I’ve committed her words to hard copy for sprucing up after I put my glasses on and turn the lights on.

4: When you are not writing, whom do you enjoy reading?

Hold on a minute while I go dive through our crates of books for the names of all the authors. You expect me to remember them all? Me? With my stellar memory? You know me better than that. (Play some music here while I dive away.)

Okay, I KNOW I am going to leave out hoards of those that I adore, and to them I ask your forgiveness…believe me I buy and read your work all the time. First, Glenn Kleier, author of one of the most incredible stories I have ever read THE LAST DAY…Glenn thank you for finally coming out with your next book. I can’t wait for February and Amazon to put it up on the pre-order list. Dame Agatha Christie. No matter how many times I read and reread her works I am astounded by how many clues are woven right there for you to catch throughout the body of her writing, if you were smart enough to pick up on them. J.D. Robb’s IN DEATH series. Do you think we will really be flitting around off planet the way Roarke does in 2060? Lynsay Sands…ah the Argeneau Vampires, especially Marguerite, I LOVE that Vampire! Mary Janice Davidson’s King Al. I adore King Al’s Alaska and MJD we need you to give us more of King Al. And although I have only read snippets so far, I am so looking forward to reading many of my fellow Muse authors up and coming works. The Alvarez family intrigues me. The dust cloud with the menacing face swirling within it, the bishops atop a checkerboard playing field and one of them is bleeding, dragons, witches, warlocks, and poor guys lost in the 15th century.

5: What do you do for fun?

Besides teasing you? Hmmm…let me think. I love playing toss with a crinkle ball and Spatz, our youngest cat, and giving the oldest one the evil eye when she sits on my electronics and sucks the heat right out of them. What I want to know is why MINE and not yours?

6: What is the one thing you’d most like people to know about you?

I love my daughter and more than anything else I don’t want to embarrass you but always make you proud of me. No matter what I write, it has to pass the Kat test first because ultimately your opinion matters most.

7: If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and why?

I think Montana so we could meet all the members of our new family in person. Until 2008 it was just you, your brother and me against the world, and now we have tons of family…and that’s such a blessing to cherish.

8: You are now multi-contracted with both MuseItUp and her hotter sister MuseItHot. Can you tell us about how many books we can look forward to from you starting in December and going all through 2011?

I received my SEVENTH contract on June 3rd.
1. Santa is a Lady-the First in my Christmas Miracles series; release date 12/1/2010 from MuseItUp
2. The Pendulum Swings; release date March 2011 from MuseItHot
3. Twilight Comes; release date May 2011 but I don’t know which side that will come from.
4. In From the Cold; release date June 2011 from MuseItHot
5. Beyond Yesterday: release date September 2011 and I’m not sure which side it will come from either.
6. The Christmas War; release date December 2011 the second Christmas Miracles from MuseItUp.
7. This Time Forever: I don’t have a release date or the side it will come from yet.

9: What advice would you give to a new author?

Never give up your dream, no matter how long it takes, and write, write, write.

10: Your first book, coming out December 1st of 2010 is a Christmas story, first in a series. What inspired you to create this story?

One of our local Santa Claus’s was arrested a few days before Christmas last year and I couldn’t help wondering what a store would do as the crunch time comes and their Santa is arrested. All the “professional and male” Santas will be working, so if you are a woman with a confectionary shop, who do you call on to help? Your best friend and of course because she’s your best friend you know how to push her buttons so she can’t say no to you.

11: There is a very cunning cat in your story. Can you tell us a little bit about the cat who inspired the character in your book?

You do know it is very wicked of you to ask this question don’t you? Now everyone will know I am NOT creative at all. {lowering my head in shame, my shoulders drooping too.}

I admit Mama Bear in the story is our very own Mama Bear, the eldest of our two cats and the things she does in the story are all things she does in real life. Is that plagiaristic? Do I need to get Mama Bear to sign some kind of a release contract? OMG...given how much of a Sarah Bernhardt she is when she gets a paw wet…(Mama Bear has caused Kat and I few heart attacks over the years when she comes out limping on three paws while holding her front fourth at an angle before her…why is she doing this? Because the offending paw is WET.)…can you imagine how she’ll be if we ask her to dip her paw in ink and sign a contract?

12: What was the driving force behind your creation of both the hero and the heroine for your tale?

You are nosy, daughter of mine. Angie, the female is very loosely based on my own history. I was the one in that car accident and the one who endured the years of rehabilitation. You are not Beck though…you’re much nicer than Beck.

Cam is loosely modeled after your uncle, the bringer of all that new Montana family I spoke of earlier. Your war hero uncle Eric, who served several tours in Iraq and served with the Army Corp of Engineers, has the blue eyes, the buzz cut and the height and brawn that I gave to Cam.

13: Would you please share a brief blurb about what Santa Is A Lady about?

I’m just working through my first edits, so I don’t have anything yet that I can take and quote from the actual manuscript, but I can give you a sort of a synopsis.
Once Santa is arrested, Angie’s best friend Beck coerces her into donning the red suit, but Angie still needs a cane to walk with and is never going to be 100% stable on her feet.

Children high on sugar and the expectation of Christmas are rambunctious. Angie’s body is still fragile. Disaster is bound to happen, and it does.

Cam, who has finally managed to gain custody of his half Iraqi daughter after nearly two years, wants his daughter to have the perfect American Christmas. A lady Santa is not his idea of the perfect Christmas and when his little girl reveals the lady behind the beard, he is enraged.

Little Jo unveils Santa but not before calling Santa “Mama” What does the child know that the adults do not?

14: The beautiful cover for Santa Is A Lady was done by the very talented Delilah K. Stephens. What was your first thought when you saw the completed version?

Oh My God I’ve been blessed by a Cover Art Goddess!

15: Thank you so much for being here today. Lastly, is there anything else about you or your writing that you’d like people to know?

Writing is a joy for me. I love seeing my words come together, but once I have written them I forget them and they get buried in the depths of my memory. Weeks, months, years later when I locate them again, pull them out and read them I shake my head in awe that I actually wrote them. That’s what I hope my readers will feel when they have finished reading my stories.

One other thing…I have been asked what genre I write and I have to answer that I don’t know if I even have a genre. There is romance in many of my stories, but in others there is darkness that leaves no room for romance or even happiness. So do I write romance, fantasy, paranormal, dark, suspense, or do I write it all? I really don’t know and I’m not sure I want to pigeonhole myself that way. I write whatever my muse sends to me to write. Sometimes the stories come so quickly I don’t really know what it is the muse is channeling through me until it is done and I go back and read it and wonder, “Where did that come from?” I only know writing is part of the beat of my heart and the blood flowing through my veins. It is who I am, and who I have always been. I cannot suppress it, but I’m glad because in the final analysis I think my Grandmother, Katie Sickle and Mary Powers are all in Heaven nodding their heads in approval of the storyteller I have become.

Thank you so much for being here. This was such a lot of fun. If you'd like to learn more about L.J. Holmes feel free to visit her blog. And check her out on the MuseItUp website!

Edits!

I don't know about you guys, but I happen to love the edit process. It is so much fun to me. Of course it helps that I have a great editor who makes the process both painless and fun. She has an amazing sense of humor. I just finished edits on my next book a little over a week ago and am waiting for the second round. I can't wait. It's almost as much fun as the actual writing.

My mom got her very first ever batch of edits. Now she's been really nervous about the editing process because she's never done it before. It didn't matter how much I told her not to worry and how easy it was, she was still really nervous. But then her edits, done by the same editor I have, the amazing Carrie RO, came and she started working on it.

Surprise surprise, they were easy just as I said they'd be. Now I don't have to worry about her chaining me to a chair and forcing me to go through em with her step by step. She can do it herself. So, don't fear edits people. I love them and they really are easy to do.
